I am delighted to welcome your participation in the eighth annual International Education Week to be held from November 12 through 16, 2007. The theme for this year, International Education: Fostering Global Citizenship and Respect, could not be more pertinent to our children.

In our globalizing societies, all of us must face a large number of pressing issues, including world peace, the development of the global economy, and protecting the earth's environment. The campaign under this year's theme is designed to further global awareness and knowledge among students as a means to develop citizens who are fully prepared to engage these critical issues.

It is important for each and every student to study the cultures and history of the countries around the world. By learning and understanding these varied and differing customs and cultures, these students are able to bring a broad perspective to solving problems and are able to live amicably amongst each other.

In taking advantage of this opportunity to study the countries and regions of the world, the study of Japan would fit perfectly into the goals of this year’s theme. Japan has a rich traditional culture that includes tea ceremony and martial arts, paired with a lively popular culture, which includes anime, manga and music. Add a world-renown high-tech culture that leads the world in robotics, electronics, automotive and biotech industries and you have a fascinating country to explore. "Cool Japan" has something of interest for everyone. The Embassy of Japan and the Consulates-General of Japan located around the United States stand ready to lend a helping hand in this effort.

In conclusion, I would like to express my sincere thanks and respect to the Department of Education and the Department of State for sponsoring the International Education Week campaign, and offer my fondest hopes for its resounding success.
