Flat Stanley and Flat Stella

Image of Flat Stanley in an IEW 2008 sweatshirtTo celebrate International Education Week, the U.S. Department of State and U.S. Department of Education are proud to participate in the Flat Stanley Project.

The Flat Stanley Project was started by Dale Hubert in 1995, and is based on a series of children's books by Jeff Brown. In the story, Stanley Lambchop is a little boy who is squished flat by his bulletin board as he sleeps one night. Being flat allows Stanley to participate in a series of adventures as he is mailed (or emailed) all around the world. Flat Stanley has gone to such diverse locales as Ghana, Tibet, and Afghanistan, flown in space on the Space Shuttle Discovery, and met many politicians and celebrities.

View our suggestions on how to submit your photos.

We hope to hear from you soon!
