Alumni and current participants of the program are participating in a variety of events during IEW.
· Kingman High School (AZ) students will collaborate with a junior high school class in studying Sumi-e (Japanese brush painting) and Shodo (Japanese calligraphy). Toni Bigelow (June 2005)
· Oso Grande Elementary School (CA) third grade students will continue their study of Japan and create a PowerPoint slide show to share with classmates. (Suzanne Griffin, June 2005)
· Eighth grade students from Whitney Whealdon's (October 2005) class at West Feliciana Middle School (LA) will visit an elementary school to teach first grade classes about the geography, culture and language of Japan.
· Fifth grade students at Merritt Memorial School (NJ) are learning Haiku from teacher Marie Papaleo (June 2005) and will display their poetry during IEW.
· Seven Hills School (OH) Middle School Theater and Visual Arts programs will collaborate on a Japanese bunraku style puppet play. Students in grades six through eight will perform with puppets based on the techniques used in Japanese bunraku (puppet theatre). Carolyn Giles (June 2005)
· Autumn Breitwieser (June 2005) will present a slideshow of her experiences in the program to colleagues at McKay High School (OR) and the Salem Keizer school district.
· Sue Abernathy (October 2005) will incorporate traditional Japanese games, culture and activities into the physical education curriculum at Mt. View Elementary School (TN).

· In addition the following events will be held:
Shiojiri Elementary School in Nagano Prefecture will celebrate IEW with photographs and essays created with Billy Mitchell Elementary School (CA). Shiojiri will also exhibit photographs of its Halloween party and masks made by students.
· Nusamai Junior High School in Hokkaido and Delmar Middle and Senior High School (DE) will have a videoconference on Nov 15 (U.S.time) / Nov 16 (Japan time). The schools will report on their recent trips to zoos and the animals of their regions. Delmar students will email a "photo safari" to Nusamai before the conference. The Delmar District Superintendent will attend. The conference will also focus on cultural exchanges and Q&As between the students.
· Sebastian River Middle School (FL) will hold a videoconference with Naka Jr. High School in Gifu Prefecture on Nov 17 (USA Time) / Nov 18 (Japan Time). Students will discuss their interests, sports activities, and Pair Project.
· Komatsu Nanbu Junior High School in Ishikawa Prefecture and Hillside Middle School (MI) will hold a videoconference on Nov 15 (USA Time) / Nov 16 (Japan Time). Students will present findings from the BUGS project.
· Columbus High School (MO) and Onomichi-Higashi High School in Hiroshima Prefecture will discuss their Pair Project through a trivia game focusing on the two participating cities. A videoconference will be held Nov 17 (USA Time) / Nov 18 (Japan Time).
· McKinley High School (OH) teacher Tom Harenn will teach a class by web cam to Matsuyama Technical High School in Ehime Prefecture on species of wildlife present in Ohio. The Japanese students will share information on organisms in their immediate area.
· Callisburg High School (TX) and Kesennuma High School in Miyagi Prefecture will have a videoconference on Nov 15 (USA Time). Students will make presentations on cultural holidays in each country, including the U.S. Thanksgiving holiday.
· Students at Bennett Elementary School (VA) will hold a videoconference with students at Kashiwagi Elementary School in Hokkaido on Nov 15 (USA Time) / Nov 16 (Japan Time). The discussion will include paired-project information as well as a Q&A session between students.
· Xavier High School (WI) and Tsuchiura First High School in Ibaraki Prefecture will hold a videoconference on Nov 17 (USA Time) / Nov 18 (Japan Time). The students will compare levels of energy consumption in Japan and the U.S.

The U.S. Embassy's Non-Immigrant Visa Section (NIV) and PAEF will hold a dialogue with high school seniors, school representatives of local high schools about the process of studying in the U.S., student visa applications, and U.S. education. Select students will also discuss why they are applying to U.S. schools and their application plans so far.

Cagayan de Oro
November 15
PAEF's Executive Director will attend the International Fair on Protocol and Diplomatic Practices, a 5-day event organized by Xavier University in Cagayan de Oro to promote U.S. education and the Fulbright Scholarship program. She will join members of the U.S. Embassy's Public Affairs Section to discuss the role of America within the international diplomatic community.

FSE has a full week planned. Each afternoon during the week, we will have a workshop that follows the pattern shown below. Those involved will be current U.S. Fulbright grantees and returned Taiwan Fulbright grantees. Each workshop will be organized as follows:

Part One: Warm-up Activities, including English speaking activities conducted by a Fulbright spouse, Ms. Lee Steiner, who has ESL training and credentials, as well as extensive experience working with Taiwan students in the U.S.

Part Two: Introduction of U.S. universities and areas of study. This will include the following:
(A) Introduction of institutions attended by our returned Taiwan Fulbright grantees, most of which are well-known private and state universities that are usually favored by Taiwan students
(B) Introduction of lesser-known, small colleges and universities that our U.S. Fulbright grantees teach at, or studied at. It will give the grantees a chance to recruit for these schools or establish relationships, as well as making the advantages of attending smaller institutions better known among Taiwan students and their parents.
(C) Introduction of areas of study, including admissions criteria, areas of concentration, degree requirements, etc.

Part Three: How to Write a Statement of Purpose or Study Plan
This will have both a general section and specific sections on individual areas of study which the Fulbright grantees are knowledgeable about.

Both before and after IEW, there will be a number of reach out sessions when the advisers and grantees will visit universities to conduct seminars or workshops.

The Fulbright Center will participate in an information day in Oulu, which focuses on funding opportunities for internationally mobile researchers. Fulbright Center grant programs for Finnish and American researchers are presented at a session by Program Manager Tuula Laurila.

November 16
Brenda J. Seiton, Assistant Dean for Administration at Emory University School of Medicine will give a presentation on medical study in the United States at the center. The session will provide a brief overview on the structure of medical education and opportunities available for international students.

November 17
The Fulbright Center will organize an information session on undergraduate study in the U.S., detailing the admission process, application timeline and cost. The session presenter is Program Manager Terhi Topi.

November 18
Fulbright Bicentennial Professor Stephen Rabe will give his inaugural lecture. The lecture is titled "Debate Without End: The Vietnam War -Thirty Years Later" and it will be held at the University of Helsinki.

The 4th edition of the popular Destination USA guide will be published during International Education week. It is part of a series of guides in Finnish on study abroad opportunities and is edited by the Fulbright Center. It is a comprehensive guide about American higher education opportunities.

Additionally, The Helsinki International School organizes a College Fair for high school students in conjunction with a CIS College Tour, which arrives in Finland on November 14th, 2005. Fulbright Center will participate in the fair.

To cap the International Education celebrations, the Fulbright Center will host an Open House on November 23rd. Finnish and U.S. Fulbright grantees and other friends of the Fulbright Center are invited to share a moment with the staff with refreshments and live music.

For the fourth consecutive International Education Week, on November 16, the two educational advisers of the Franco-American Commission for Educational Exchange (Fulbright Commission) will hold a special Study in the United States Day - Etudier aux Etats-Unis at the Paris Centre d' Information et de Documentation Jeunesse (CIDJ). The largest youth information center in France, the CIDJ was founded in 1969 at the initiative of the French Ministry of Youth and Sports. The advisers will be available non-stop from 10:00am - 5:00pm to answer students' questions about study, jobs, etc. in the U.S. and each in turn will participate in a formal morning and afternoon conference on studying in the U.S. With approximately 2,000 visitors on an ordinary day, special days such as ours have attracted far more in the past as a result of press releases and a widespread information campaign carried out by the CIDJ.
During the IEW2004 event, besides holding two standing room only conferences, the advisers gave mini-consultations to 112 high school and university students, parents, scholars, and school personnel.

Outreach program in the French provincial universities

Associated with the 2005 International Education Week and in collaboration with five Pôles Universitaires Européens, seven youth information centers (CRIJ), and U.S. consulates, an educational adviser of the Franco-American Commission will be pursuing an outreach program in the French provinces in October, November, and December 2005. The Pôles - public interest groups under the aegis of the French Ministry of Education and Research - in Bordeaux, Lille, Rennes, Strasbourg, and Toulouse are organizing and publicizing the adviser s two-hour conferences Etudier aux Etats-Unis in their cities. In Lyon and Marseille the conference is being organized and publicized by the International Relations Offices of local universities. In each of the seven cities, besides doing an evening conference, the adviser will spend a day doing one-to-one advising in the CRIJ. The schedule for the seven cities is the following: Lille, October 11 and 12; Strasbourg, October 18 and 19; Bordeaux, November 8 and 9; Toulouse, November 22 and 23; Rennes, November 29 and 30; Lyon, December 6 and 7; Marseille, December 13 and 14.

1. The Polish - U.S Fulbright Commission invites participants to a day-long conference commemorating International Education Week in the U.S. Polish-U.S. Academic Exchange and its Role in Science Development. The conference, organized with the support of U.S. Embassy Warsaw and the Polish Fulbright Alumni Association will bring together participants representing Polish universities and other institutions of higher education interested in cooperation with U.S. schools. Two Fulbright Scholars are invited speakers - Professor Stan Breckenridge of Fullerton University and Professor George Gladney of University of Wisconsin. Polish Fulbright Alumni and Polish-U.S. Fulbright Commission Staff will also present.

The main conference themes are:
· information on exchange programs under bilateral agreements and their input into academic life in both countries;
· educational policy of the U.S.;
· role of media in academic exchange; and
· intercultural aspects of academic life

A panel discussion by American Fulbright Scholars and Polish university officials who are conducting international programs will close the academic part of the conference. Current trends and the future perspectives of Polish - U.S. academic cooperation and exchange as the engine of advancement of science will also be discussed. New methods and new opportunities will be presented.

2. All students who plan to study in American universities and colleges are invited to the workshop on 'Study USA' - How to Prepare Successful Application to U.S. University/ College'. All procedures and admission process, as well as the most interesting programs offered by U.S. universities and colleges will be discussed. American Fulbright Students will speak about student's life on campus and how they can be successful as international students. Financial aid opportunities, scholarships, grants and loans will also be presented. The Vice Consul of the U.S. Embassy will discuss visa process and explain all technical and merit details of student's visas.

3. Another IEW events will be two workshops organized in organized at the Teacher's College at Zlotowo on Nov. 16, and at the State Higher Vocational School in Pila on November 17. The students will have the chance to learn about the system of U.S. higher education, its friendliness to students and great offer of American universities and colleges. They will also get acquainted with financial aid opportunities, scholarships and grants as well as loans available for graduate students. Information about successful application and student visas will be provided. The Pila IEW event workshop is going out to these potential students who study far away from major academic centers and think about continuing their education in the U.S.

4. All IEW events in Poland will be covered by media - radio, local TV and papers. We believe that they will be a very good promotion of U.S. higher education and academic achievements. It is noteworthy that all IEW Celebration events in Poland are organized by Fulbright Commission in close cooperation with U.S. Embassy Warsaw and U.S. Consulate General Cracow.

3:00-5:00pm, "New England: its culture and educational opportunities." The presenter Jen MacArthur is currently serving as Senior English Language Fellow, based at U.S. Embassy.
In this interactive session participants will learn about the New England liberal arts college experience. The session will focus on the benefits (and disadvantages?) of small liberal arts colleges in a region of the U.S. that Romanian students find extremely attractive, judging by the number of enrollments.

November 16
A case study of a small New England liberal arts college: spotlight on Bates College, Lewiston, Maine. Presenter: Jen MacArthur
This session narrows the focus of the previous one: from a group of schools to one school in particular. Participants will learn from an alumna of Bates College what makes the school unique and how they can increase their admission chances.

November 17
"U.S. education and the Romanian undergrad dream"
In celebration of International Education Week, we are thrilled to show, as world premiere "J," an educational DVD on undergraduate admissions in the U.S. from the perspective of Romanian students. The actors have been admitted and funded by Amherst College, Hamilton College, Duke University, Harvard College, Yale University, Mt. Holyoke College, and Occidental College. The DVD was been produced by the Fulbright Educational Advising Center and its student fans, with a grant from U.S. Embassy Bucharest.

In honor of International Education Week 2005, the Fulbright Program in Ukraine organizes three seminars related to International Education area. Fulbright alumni moderate and make presentation at these seminars:

1. "Ukraine in the European Comparative Dimension: The Issues and Perspectives of Research": Modern methodology problems of comparative studies in Ukrainian sociology. - Why is it important, useful and interesting? How is it possible to compare different socio-cultural realities, is it possible at all, what are the meanings of special cultural contexts (from traditions to interpretations, etc)?
The seminar will deal with the results of recent European Social Survey conducted by the Institute of Sociology, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. Ukraine was represented there along with other 20 European nations. The speakers present some of its preliminary results and outline perspectives of development of sociology as well as of other social disciplines in comparative research.

2. "The Effect of the U.S. Regional Accreditation Process on General Education Curricula: Implications for the Bologna Process": Following on discussions at the recent Fulbright Conference in Lviv regarding university autonomy, this presentation will raise, among others, the following questions:
How does the increasing push to assess educational success using quantifiable measurements put pressure on the shape of curricula?
How do assessment and accreditation standards affect university autonomy?
How do Ukrainian universities establish and maintain their Ukrainian-ness while also establishing their European-ness?

3. "Visions & Spaces of Kyiv: The Gendered Experience of the City": U.S. Fulbright researchers Prof. Marian Mazzone and Prof. Myron Stachiw put forward for discussion the following issues: Analyzing the spatial and visual aspects of the city through gender leads the scholar to cross disciplines, to question divisions and hierarchies within academic study, and to become more aware of their own position in relationship to what they study.

The Fulbright Program in the Ukraine will also participate in the exhibition "Education and Carrier - 2005:"
· round tables and seminars on students' research;
· round tables on international cooperation in educational sphere;
· youth programs and students exchange programs; and
· new technologies in education.

The Fulbright Association Board and Fulbright Programs alumni will take part in the round table: ”Developing of Joint Educational Projects and Further Cooperation in Education” with representatives of foreign universities, international educational programs and funds, vice-rectors on international cooperation and Ukrainian educational elite.

Surat, Gujarat
· M.T.B. College Campus, Surat, Gujarat: Two presentations on "Undergraduate Education in the U.S." and "Graduate education in the U.S." will be made followed by individual counseling sessions by USEFI staff for two separate student groups through the day. This is a one-day program targeting an audience of around 400 - 500 students from around 35 educational institutions under the umbrella of Sarvajanik Education Society.

Quiz Competition on India and the U.S. for school students
Twenty teams from 20 institutions will be allowed to register on a first-come-first served basis. There will be 4 rounds of quarterfinals, 1 round of semi-finals and 1 round of finals. We will organize a prize distribution function for the participants and the winners that will also feature Indian and American instrumental music.

· Netscape: Vision for Change: A website designing event which would have senior school participants of age group of 13-17 years from a number of schools in Delhi and adjoining cities. The participating teams would present the website to the audience on a selected topic followed by Q & A. This event is jointly hosted by USEFI & Ryan International School New Delhi. The audience comprises of high school students from over 10 schools and their teachers.

Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology, Patiala, Punjab: This event would be hosted jointly by the USEFI and Thapar Institute of Technology. The event would comprise of a PowerPoint presentation, "Pursuing Higher Education in the U.S.," which would focus on upcoming fields in engineering. The audience would be second, third, and final year students at the institute.

The U.S. Embassy in San Jose will hold a reception in honor of current and former participants in the Fulbright Program. Newly arrived Ambassador Langdale will attend this event and speak on the importance of educational exchanges, like the Fulbright Program, in promoting mutual understanding. A visiting U.S. delegation from the civic education organization, Civitas, will also attend the reception. The delegation will be headed by New Mexico's Secretary of State, Ms. Rebecca Vigil-Giron and State Bar of Texas President, Mr. Eduardo Roberto Rodriguez; a representative from the group will give remarks about the work of Civitas in Costa Rica and abroad, and inform the guests of opportunities for involvement in its work.

"Public Speaking Training for English Teachers in Ibarra. Our English Teaching Fellow and our academic advisor will travel to Ibarra, a northern city of Ecuador to train teachers on public speaking techniques so that they can teach their students and carry on a competition titled "The Heroes of My Country" which will be fully in English. The competition will take place a week later on November 25.

"Law and Society" Forum presented by young lawyers who are returning from the U.S. to discuss the legal situation in Ecuador and their views on how their education in the U.S. will benefit the Ecuadorian system.

November 16
"Children of Fulbright" presentation by the children of recently returned Fulbrighters on their experiences, what they learned, what they liked, and what they didn't like about living in the U.S. We will invite the community to this session. It will be a different approach as children see things in a very unique and sincere way.

November 18
"Public Speaking Training for English Teachers in Ibarra. Illa Rocconi Quintanilla, Director of the Educational Advising Center will speak about the general admissions process, types of financial aid, and, in particular, about the opportunities available through the Fulbright Program.

Washington, D.C.
As part of the celebration of International Education Week, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, and the U.S. Department of Education, Fulbright Visiting Scholars from Egypt and Jordan will be meeting and speaking with grade-school children in Virginia this Wednesday, November 16, and Friday, November 18, to expand current understanding and knowledge of Islamic societies and cultures.

Fulbright Visiting Scholar Sherif Moussa of Egypt will visit a 2nd and 3rd grade multi-age classroom at Cora Kelly School for Math, Science and Technology on Wednesday, November 16, at 1 p.m. He will talk to the children about his homeland, culture, favorite traditions, and family life during a discussion of “The Many Faces of Islam.” A question and answer period with the students will follow. Dr. Moussa, who is a lecturer in the Department of Chemistry at Ain Shams University in Cairo, Egypt, is presently a Fulbright Visiting Scholar conducting research on “Characterization of Nanofabricated Advanced Materials” at Virginia Commonwealth University, College of Humanities and Sciences, Department of Chemistry in Richmond, Virginia.

Fulbright Visiting Scholar Samer Abu Libdeh of Jordan will visit the 10th through 12th grade journalism students at T.C. Williams High School on Friday, November 18, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Samer, who is a freelance reporter for an independent firm that works to promote democracy and human rights awareness in Jordan, will speak with the students about current events in the Middle East. During the sessions, Samer will also help the aspiring journalists write articles for their student newspaper. A question and answer period with the students will follow. Samer is presently a Fulbright/American Political Science Association (APSA) Congressional Fellow on Capitol Hill. He has been awarded a ten-month grant to research the workings of the U.S. government through professional experience with Congressional staffs. Samer is currently examining and analyzing the progress of the U.S.-Jordanian official state relations and the discourse of democracy promotion in Jordan.
