ARCHIVED 2005

PROCLAMATION BY M. MICHAEL ROUNDS
GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF SOUTH DAKOTA

Whereas, In partnership with the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education, the state of South Dakota will celebrate International Education Week November 14 – 18, 2005. Let us recommit ourselves to promoting tolerance and building friendships between the United States and other nations; and,

Whereas, International education and exchange include thousands of programs, public and private, campus-based and national, that promote the sharing of ideas and experiences across borders. These include study abroad programs, citizen and scholarly exchanges, foreign students on U.S. campuses, area and foreign language studies, and global approaches to U.S. education. Currently, over 700 foreign students are studying at South Dakota colleges and universities; and,

Whereas, In support of U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings, I call upon the citizens and institutions of South Dakota to participate in celebrating this week and to recognize the importance of international education in our lives and communities and to promote international educational exchange as a way to enhance mutual understanding and acceptance:

Now, Therefore, I, M. Michael Rounds, Governor of the state of South Dakota, do hereby proclaim November 14 - 18, 2005, as

INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION WEEK

in South Dakota.

In Witness Whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused to be affixed the Great Seal of the state of South Dakota, in Pierre, the Capital City, this Tenth Day of November in the Year of Our Lord, Two Thousand and Five.

M. Michael Rounds, Governor
