PROCLAMATION BY MICHAEL F. EASLEY
GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA
WHEREAS, the source of international understanding,
respect and appreciation begins with education and the
exchange of knowledge between students, scholars and
members of the public; and
WHEREAS, international education builds strong leadership
skills, fosters appreciation for the U.S. and other
cultures as well as invests in future relationships
between Americans and citizens from around the world;
and
WHEREAS, international education prepares U.S. citizens
to live, work and compete in the global economy; and
WHEREAS, the Institute of International Education reports
that nearly 9,000 international students study in North
Carolina each year and nearly 7,000 North Carolina students
participate in study abroad programs, and international
students and scholars come to North Carolina from approximately
100 countries; and
WHEREAS, international education brings in more than
$195 million dollars annually to the State of North
Carolina; and
WHEREAS, the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau
of Education and Cultural Affairs along with the U.S.
Department of Education began this joint initiative
in 2000 as part of an effort to promote programs that
prepare Americans for a global environment and attract
future leaders from abroad to study, learn, and exchange
experiences in the United States; and
WHEREAS, in 2004 institutions from all fifty states
and over 100 countries participated in celebrating International
Education Week;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, MICHAEL F. EASLEY, Governor of the
State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim November
14-18, 2005 as “INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION WEEK”
in North Carolina and urge our citizens to celebrate
the benefits of international education and exchange
worldwide by participating in a wide variety of events
available at schools, colleges and universities, embassies,
international organizations, businesses, associations,
and community organizations throughout the state.
