STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION RESOLUTION
NEW JERSEY DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION
WHEREAS, the information revolution, technological
advances, and changing immigration patterns have fundamentally
changed the world our children will inhabit; and
WHEREAS, this year's international education theme
is International Education: Improving Student Achievement
Around the World; and
WHEREAS, international education promotes knowledge
and understanding of other countries beyond U.S. borders
- including their language, history, geography, religion,
arts, ad political and economic systems; and
WHEREAS, international education fosters creativity,
critical thinking, and problem solving through the exploration
of complex and controversial global issues; and
WHEREAS, communicating in languages other than English,
especially those critical for economic and security
purposes, working in cross-cultural environments, and
knowing how to use information from worldwide sources
are essential skills for the international workplace;
and
WHEREAS, the 2005 Regional International Education
Discussion and Awareness Forums have demonstrated
how the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards
serve as the foundation for infusing international knowledge
and skills in all content areas; and
WHEREAS, the New Jersey International Education
Taskforce is preparing a five-year plan to submit
to the Governor in 2006 to support the implementation
of international knowledge and skills in New Jersey's
schools and as part of the high school reform process;
and
WHEREAS, from November 14-18, 2005, the U.S. Department
of State and the U.S. Department of Education have proclaimed
the sixth annual International Education Week affirming
international education as critical to state and national
interests; now therefore be it
RESOLVED, that the New Jersey State Board of Education
hereby recognizes the importance of November 14-18,
2005 as International Education Week in New Jersey amd
strongly supports implementing and improving international
education in New Jersey to provide students the best
opportunity for success in the diverse communities and
workplaces of the 21st century.
